Indications for Use of an Orthosis, or Support Brace on the Wrist (Carpal Joint) of a Dog or Cat

Wrist Brace (Carpal Joint Support Brace) is a reliable device for supporting and stabilizing the wrist in dogs. It is used in a wide range of cases where the joint requires fixation and protection:

  • hyperextension of the wrist;
  • ligament sprains;
  • injuries and bruises;
  • fractures or cracks as recommended by a veterinarian;
  • wrist drooping in puppies;
  • cartilage tissue damage causing wrist hyperextension;
  • during recovery after wearing the Ilizarov apparatus (for muscle contractures and spasms).

Wrist braces are often recommended by cynologists for puppies during periods of active growth — especially for large and giant breeds, when weight increases rapidly and the musculoskeletal system is still weak.

The device may also be recommended by veterinarians:

  • before or after surgery;

  • as an alternative to surgery if it is contraindicated due to age or health condition.

Design:

  • Removable stiffening ribs (usually 4 straight or 2 flexible ribs included).
  • Durable base made of neoprene or neoprene with 3D mesh.
  • Fixation follows the splint principle, providing reliable stabilization of the limb.
  • Additional support for the toes with a special elastic strap to prevent curling into a fist and protect the dorsal side of the paw.

Measurements for manufacturing are taken the same way in all cases, regardless of diagnosis or reason for use.

How to Take Measurements for a Wrist Brace (Carpal Joint) for a Dog or Cat?

To take measurements of your dog, you will need a soft measuring tape.

Important: the measuring tape should fit snugly around the dog’s body without pressing too tightly, so the measurements are precise but do not cause discomfort to your pet.

1. Upper Leg Circumference (O1)

Measure 1–2 cm below the elbow joint and take the circumference of the leg horizontally around the entire limb. Place the measuring tape snugly against the leg without gaps. The dog’s position (lying, sitting, or standing) does not affect the measurement.

2. Brace Length (D1)

Measure the distance from the O1 line to the lower point of the brace in a straight line, preferably along the front side of the leg, down to the level of the fifth toe (see illustration).

3. Lower Leg Circumference (O2)

At the level of the fifth toe, measure the circumference of the paw horizontally around the entire limb.

4. Length to the Wrist Bone (D2)

If an additional wrist bone protrudes more than 1 cm, measure the distance from the fifth toe to this bone (D2).

Length 2 (D2) should be measured only if the additional wrist bone (shown in the illustration above) protrudes significantly—more than 1 cm. In this case, we will make an opening in the brace to accommodate it.

Measurement examples

You can send us photos of your pet’s measurements in the format shown below.

This allows us to make the brace as accurately as possible according to your measurements, taking all nuances into account.

Important Recommendations for Taking Measurements

Consider Wrist Deformities

If your pet has any deformities, be sure to mention them when ordering, take photos, and measure if necessary. This will help us create a brace that perfectly fits your animal.

Combination with Paw Support

In some cases, the wrist brace is made with additional support for the paw in its natural position — for example, in cases of:

  • insensitivity of the toes or paw;
  • ligament tears;
  • refusal of the animal to put weight on the paw;
  • wearing down of the dorsal side of the paw.

Such a model may have an adjustable elastic strap or protective plates. The elastic strap can be tightened and secured by yourself or with the help of a veterinarian.

Stiffening Ribs

All braces come with removable stiffening ribs, which can be positioned comfortably for your pet.

Protection Against Chewing

If your dog lives outside, in a kennel, or may chew the brace, we recommend ordering protective covers. Let them chew those instead 😉. You can also use a veterinary collar or Copoly bandage to protect the brace.

How to Put a Wrist Brace, Orthosis, or Support on a Dog or Cat

1. Determine the top of the brace

  • For large breeds – use the opening for the protruding bone at the back of the wrist as your guide. Place the bone in this opening to ensure the brace sits correctly.
  • For small breeds – use the company’s brand tag as a reference point. It should be positioned at the top, on the back side of the leg.

2. Check the placement of the support stays

Place the brace against the leg and make sure that:

  • straight stays are positioned around the perimeter of the limb;
  • flexible (movable) stays are on the sides to control movement.

If the stays are incorrectly placed, adjust them to the correct position.

3. Put on and secure the brace

Wrap the brace around the wrist snugly, but without excessive pressure. Fasten the hook-and-loop straps all the way around until fully closed.

4. Secure the toe support strap (if included)

Pass the strap under the two middle toes to prevent them from curling into a fist and to protect the top side of the paw.

With accurate measurements, we can easily make the right product for your pet.

If you have any doubts about the measurements you took, we can guide you to take them online via Viber, Telegram, WhatsApp, or Messenger.

Measurements can also be taken at most veterinary clinics in your country by prior appointment.

If the measurements turn out to be incorrect and the product needs adjustments, we are always happy to help. You won’t pay anything extra for the adjustment — only for shipping the product both ways.

We also truly appreciate video and photo feedback 🙂

Wishing good health to you and your pets!
