When to use a hock brace, orthosis, or support for a dog or cat

Hock Brace, Orthosis, or Support for Dogs and Cats

A hock brace is an effective solution for supporting, stabilising, and protecting your pet’s rear leg at the hock joint (heel area). It is used when the joint needs restricted movement, correct positioning, or protection from re-injury.

Common uses include:

  • Sprains or ligament tears – to limit excessive movement and speed up recovery.
  • Hock subluxations or dislocations – keeps the joint in proper alignment for healing.
  • Fractures or bone cracks – as additional support after a cast or as prescribed by a veterinarian.
  • Achilles tendon injuries – including partial or complete ruptures, and after surgical repair.
  • Swelling, inflammation, or arthritis – to reduce strain and ease discomfort.
  • Joint dysplasia and degenerative conditions – for stability in chronic cases.
  • Post-operative recovery – to protect and support during healing.
  • Prevention of re-injury – especially in active, sporting, or working dogs and cats.
  • Muscle contracture after injury – helps straighten curled toes and prevent injury to the top of the paw.
  • Heel injuries (“heel disease”) – protects against further trauma and promotes healing.

Hock braces are also commonly prescribed for puppies and kittens with joint or ligament instability, as well as for senior pets to improve mobility and comfort.

Design features:

The hock brace is made from neoprene with a Velcro-friendly fabric outer layer.

Depending on the condition, it may include an elastic strap to support the paw and a padded insert to relieve pressure on the Achilles tendon.

Some models feature two lateral rigid splints, which may be fixed or hinged for controlled movement.

For cases of heel injury, the brace can be designed to cover the heel while leaving the front of the hock joint open, as recommended by a veterinarian.

How to Measure Your Dog or Cat for a Hock Brace

To take measurements, you will need a soft measuring tape.

Important: The tape should fit snugly against your dog’s body without pressing into the skin. This ensures accurate measurements without causing discomfort to your pet.

  • Upper length (Д1) – Measure from the midpoint of the lower leg to the centre of the hock joint, along the front of the leg. The midpoint of the lower leg is the halfway point between the knee and the hock joint.
  • Lower length (Д2) – Measure from the middle of the hock joint (heel) to the bend of the toes.
  • Upper circumference (О1) – Measure the circumference of the leg above the hock joint (mid-lower leg).
  • Second circumference (О2) – Measure the circumference just above the hock joint.
  • Third circumference (О3) – Measure the circumference just below the hock joint.
  • Lower circumference (О4) – Measure the circumference of the leg just before the bend of the toes.

In many cases, a hock brace is used to help lift the paw into its natural position — for example, when there is loss of sensation in the paw or toes, ligament rupture, or when the animal drags the leg. For this purpose, the brace may be equipped with an adjustable elastic strap or protective plates. This measurement is taken from Circumference 1 (О1) to the tips of the toes, with the hock joint bent as it would be during walking (see illustration). You can take this measurement while your pet is lying down — just make sure to bend the leg first. The elastic strap is adjustable, so once the brace is fitted you can tighten and secure it in the desired position yourself, or have a veterinarian assist you.

Key Tips for Measuring Your Pet

Consider Joint Deformities

If your pet has any joint deformities, please make sure to mention them when placing your order. Include photos and, if needed, take measurements.

This helps us create a hock brace that fits your pet perfectly.

Combining with Paw Support

In some cases, a hock brace is made with additional paw support in its natural position, for example, if your pet has:

  • Loss of sensation in the paw or toes
  • Ligament tears
  • Difficulty placing weight on the paw
  • Wear on the top of the paw

Such a model may include an adjustable elastic strap or protective plates. The strap can be tightened and secured either by yourself or with the help of a veterinarian.

Rigid Splints

Hock braces can be equipped with removable rigid splints, which can be positioned for your pet’s comfort. Typically, these splints are fixed boomerang-shaped pieces at a 140° angle, but hinged splints may also be used if joint movement is allowed by your veterinarian.

Fitting a Hock Brace for Your Dog or Cat

1. Identify the Top and Bottom of the Brace

The front upper part of the brace is usually marked with a tag or logo.

Make sure the heel is open when putting the brace on.

In cases where the heel should be covered, you will be instructed accordingly.

2. Put on the Brace

Carefully wrap the brace around the hock joint (heel), making sure the tag stays on the outside, along with any rigid splints if included.

If there is a strap for the toes, it should remain under the Velcro closures.

Fasten the Velcro snugly but without over-tightening, to avoid restricting blood flow. Cover the rigid splints with the Velcro if they are present.

3. Adjust the Elastic Strap (if included)

Place the strap under the middle two toes.

Adjust the tension so the paw is in a natural, walking position.
