When to Use the Elbow Brace for Dogs or Cats
1. Injuries and joint instability
The ZooLila elbow brace is used to stabilize the joint in cases of sprains, partial ligament injuries, subluxations or dislocations, as well as conditions such as bursitis, arthritis, arthrosis and elbow dysplasia.
It supports the limb, reducing stress on the joint while still allowing relative freedom of movement – especially important for active pets.
2. As an alternative or supplement to surgery
The brace can be used before and after surgery to provide extra stabilization during recovery.
It may also serve as an alternative to surgery when an operation is not possible or not recommended due to age, health conditions or financial limitations.
3. Rehabilitation and pain management in chronic conditions
The elbow brace can be used for arthritis, arthrosis, or bursitis of the elbow joint.
Gentle compression improves blood circulation, increases local temperature and helps reduce pain.
With the ZooLila brace, pets can move more comfortably and the progression of degenerative changes may be slowed down.
4. When surgery is not an option
If surgery is contraindicated, the ZooLila elbow brace can help improve quality of life, reduce pain and allow the pet to maintain mobility.
However, it is important to note that joint instability may remain, which increases the risk of arthritis over time.
Construction and Features of the ZooLila Elbow Brace
Material: made of soft, breathable and elastic neoprene (or 3D neoprene mesh) for a snug yet comfortable fit.
Outer layer: loop fabric compatible with Velcro for easy and adjustable fastening.
Optional rigid splints (not included by default):
For small and medium breeds – one splint per limb.
For large breeds – up to two splints per limb.
Anatomical shape, following the natural angle of the elbow.
Fixed by default for maximum stabilization.
In special cases, and only if recommended by a veterinarian, splints can be movable with flexion limiters to control the range of motion.
Splint fixation:
Attached to the brace with Velcro and reinforced with additional straps for secure placement.
Support system:
Sleeves usually extend to mid-forelimb, sometimes covering the carpal joint.
For bursitis, the brace may include soft elbow cushions or cut-outs for better fit and comfort.
In some designs, the brace can also stabilize the carpal joint if needed.
Counter-support system: even when only one elbow needs support, the brace is designed to connect both sides for balance and stability.
Additional chest strap helps prevent the brace from sliding backward during movement or sitting.
How to Take Measurements for an Elbow Brace for Dogs and Cats
To measure your pet, you will need a soft measuring tape.
Your dog can stand on all four legs for accuracy, but for this type of brace it is not critical.
⚠️ Important: the measuring tape should fit snugly to the dog’s body without pressing too tightly, so that the measurements are accurate but comfortable for the animal.
- ПГ (Half chest circumference): measured across the back from one armpit to the other.
- ОГ (Chest circumference): measured around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs.
- ШГ (Chest width): distance between the two armpits, measured horizontally under the neck.
- Д3 (Armpit depth): distance from the armpit to the elbow joint.
- О1 (Elbow circumference): around the elbow joint.
- Д1: distance from the elbow to the carpal joint (wrist) or up to the paw/fingers — depending on the required sleeve length.
- О2 (Wrist circumference): around the narrowest part just above the paw (or at the bottom of the sleeve).
- Д2: distance from the elbow to the bottom edge of the sleeve.
A small margin of error (1–2 cm) in circumference is acceptable. You may also send us photos of your pet with the tape in place, as shown below. This helps us create the most accurate custom brace, taking into account individual nuances.

Important Recommendations for Taking Measurements
Consider Deformations
If your pet has any deformations, such as a large swelling caused by elbow bursitis, be sure to mention them when placing the order. Take a photo and, if necessary, measure the swelling separately. This will help us create an elbow brace that fits your pet perfectly.
Combining with Paw Support
In some cases, an elbow brace needs to be combined with support for the toes or front paw, for example in cases of:
- Numbness in the toes or paw
- Ligament tears
- Refusal to put weight on the paw
- Wear on the top of the paw
Such a model may include an adjustable elastic strap, which can be tightened and secured by yourself or with the help of a veterinarian.
Reinforcements (Stays)
By default, elbow braces do not come with removable stays. Their inclusion depends on the condition – for example, fractures, cracks, or joint instability. Most often, the stays are rigid boomerangs with a 140° angle or straight splints. However, flexible stays that allow elbow movement are also possible. The use of rigid or flexible stays should always be agreed upon with your veterinarian.
Protection Against Dirt
Protective covers made of Oxford fabric or similar material can be ordered separately to keep the brace clean.
Protection Against Chewing
If your dog lives outdoors, in a kennel, or tends to chew the brace, we recommend using a veterinary collar to protect the device.
How to Put on an Elbow Brace (Orthosis, Support, or Splint) for Dogs and Cats
1. Prepare the brace
Most models come with a chest strap (thin, often solid) and a back strap (with Velcro and buckle).
Loosen the back strap as much as possible before putting the brace on.
2. Put on the support system
Carefully slip your dog’s head through the opening between the chest and back straps.
The back strap should lie along the spine, and the chest strap under the neck.
Leave the back strap loose for now to make it easier to secure the elbows.
3. Position the elbow braces
Place each elbow brace snugly around the joint.
Make sure the elbow angle is correctly positioned in the soft pad (for bursitis, arthritis, or arthrosis) or in the special cut-out, depending on the model.
4. Install reinforcements (if provided)
Attach the reinforcements to the Velcro on the brace so that they follow the natural bend of the elbow.
By default, the reinforcements are rigid, but some models allow movable stays with flexion limiters (use only if recommended by your veterinarian).
5. Fasten the elbow braces
Wrap the straps around the elbow and secure them firmly with Velcro.
Ensure the brace is snug but not overly tight, and that it does not rotate freely.
6. Adjust the back strap
Tighten and fasten the back strap for a secure but comfortable fit.
7. Check the chest strap
The front strap under the neck can remain slightly loose — this is normal and ensures comfort.
If it feels tight or restrictive, consult your veterinarian for adjustments.
